Have been attempting to play the PC version of Dark Sector ...
I would really like to be able to enjoy it, because it looks fantastic ..
Managed to stumble my way through around six (6) checkpoints, but I have to stop playing, because it is becoming far too frustrating to continue ...
The game allows you to remap the controls, which I thought was great, because trying to play with the default setup would be akin to steering a brick through an obstacle course. Seriously, who came up with WASD?! Senseless.
after the 3rd checkpoint ... the game crashes to the desktop... no error ... nothing .. just "poof" ... goodbye. The reason is because of the customized control setup ... the game doesn't like it ... and so ... crashes.
you can get past the crash by resetting the default key-bindings ( I guess that's why there is a copy of them sitting in the Config folder) ... after which you can go back to the custom bindings and continue playing ... for a little while ... the game crashes again just as you are about to meet the first level Boss ... it seems to have something to do with a conflicting help/tip message that wants to load on-screen and suggest which keys to use in the upcoming scenario (I set the keys up ... I don't need to be told what they are)
onward & upward ... continuing along ....
I thought ... great, I'm past the tutorial stage (level 1) .. so, now I can leave my key-mapping alone & enjoy the game. Wrong, I was .... heading into level 2, I find myself confronted with zombies that like to grab onto me by the throat. Then, the an icon for either W, A, S, or D appears flashing on the screen (this looks silly, by the way) ... but, I'm not using WASD ... and my newly mapped movement keys, being the arrow keys (which does make sense) don't do a thing ... so I die .. strangled to death whilst the letter "W" blinks on my screen like something out of Sesame Street .... Dismal.
I tried ... I really, really tried ...
This looks like a fantastic game based upon the six levels or so that I managed to stumble my way through with multiple crashes & ridiculous control bugs ....
I would love to play this game someday ...
someday when, and if they have come up with a functional control system ...
one that:
a) doesn't tease me into thinking that I can customize the controls so that the game can be played in a sensible, and civilized manor ... only to crash numerous times because I don't have the "default" control setup.
b) doesn't force me away from the keyboard / mouse setup (this "is" a PC version of the game, is it not) & into the world of gaming on a console controller with all its wiggly knobs & buttons ....
I'm very hopeful that a patch will be released which will fix this problem.
Great Game ... Just unplayable at present.
